DIY and done...

I have a barn door!!! Yipee... So this is how it all went down. (First excuse the dark pics- this is a very small dark hallway.)
I begged my brother to come help me. (thank you John)
Jeff lent a hand as well. (thank you honey)
And my patient brother let my girlies help out as well. Are you ever to young to learn your way around power tools?
We are in love (well I am) with the end result... My hallway is so narrow it just didn't make since to put a door back that opened into the NARROW space. The door with its original wavy glass was $20 on Craigslist and the track and rollers came from a farm supply store for another $75. I was thrilled to get my dream door for under $100!

So why the need for the door? Well I am desperate to hide my teeny tiny laundry processing area. Below is the before with my paint samples started all over the room.

And... here is all the junk that was shoved on the shelves creating complete chaos.

Armed with a trash bag I ditched half this junk and yes it did feel good. A quick trip out for matching baskets and a little DIY project to cover the open shelf above and voila!

Ok, so I know the curtain needs to be actually sewn- I have it shoved up on the shelf so you could get the idea. (old habits die hard) I also grabbed that scrap fabric from the Coop to try. I am not sure it will stay... Do you like it?

I shopped around my house for some art and threw it on the walls for interest. One area organized... a million to go! Happy Wednesday and Wilmington...enjoy the snow! -A

Office Space

I am so excited to show you this office we just finished. The client had great built-ins at the top of her landing. She came to me because she wanted to add some personality... so we did!
This desk area serves as a work space for this busy mom of two girls and a homework nook for her little ones.
She told us that she wanted it to be soft, but still have lots of personality. It is sometimes difficult to pull off "fun" and with neutrals and soothing colors. Originally, the walls were a pale blue and while pretty, they had so much more potential! We wallpapered the space in a Nina Campbell paper that easily flows off the other rooms in her house.
Pulling the green from the paper made the bookcases pop and calls attention to fun accessories.
We filled the bookcases with pretty boxes for storage, pretty covered notebooks and lucite bins packed with supplies.
We accented the area with lighting and bright accessories to play off of the wallpaper.
Brightly colored art pulls out the blues from the wall across the way and the peach and green color palate of the wall covering.
A neutral hide rug adds texture to the carpet and grounds the landing as it's own space at the top of the stairwell.
Pretty collectables pull sweet tones of lilac and green out of the walls.

Painting the built-ins in a glossy green bounces light around the space.
Her somewhat blank wall opposite the desk area called for more art and family photos. What a great place to show off her beautiful girls.
The gallery wall adds dimension and interest which is a nice balance with the wallpaper.
Last but not least, the old lighting was removed and we replaced it with a sputnik chandelier. Remember the CraigsList post from last week? Turns out, good research leads to killer finds. Let's suffice it to say that my husband was not thrilled to have to stop in Charleston on a way to a business meeting to take this chandelier out of my new CraigsList friend's ceiling.

We loved how it turned out and so do the girls. Now our happy client has both function and fun all in one space.

On a serious note, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the men, women and families who lost loved ones twelve years ago today. May God bless all that were affected by this tragedy and this great country we are fortunate to call home.

Bargain Hunter and Gatherer

Every week, we plan to share our weekend jaunts to the auctions, yard sales or web steals in hopes to inspire you to find a deal of your own or tip you off on something you (and your wallet) just can't live without. And, we'll shoot it to you straight. Today, we will start with Craig's List.

First you must understand Craigslist Speak:

Lovely: Needs a little TLC but might have potential
Beautiful: Hideous and they hope their description will change your mind
No Picture: Seller is my mother and unsure how to download pic. Most likely part of hoarding collection
Shabby Chic: Ratty, old and needs to go to dump
French: Hmmmm.
Chippendale: Could be good, most likely grandmother style furniture that is actually French
Bamboo: Could be chippendale
Retro: Mid-century (promising) and seller doesn't know what they have
Elegant: Gold

And my personal favorite:

Designer: UGLY
Case in point. This "designer" is selling these side tables for ONLY $325. I'll translate: These tables are stone so, therefore must be worth something, to someone. Perhaps someone on crack. Bonus. When you are done using them as side tables, you can play a round of Bocci ball.

And now, onto the good stuff...
This piece is labeled "vintage" which is a term I usually have good luck with... This lacquered dress is lane and $375. What a great finish and amazing lines!
Now we're talking. These are $100 and could be made to look like this with a can of spray paint.
Remember this porch Ann did? Well, "retro" chairs make a big impact in a glossy paint.
I have a thing for coffee tables. I love changing them up because they can be a focal point. This is a statement piece and is $200!
Accessorize this 36" space with...
Seriously, this beauty is on the Wilmington Craiglist. I may just make an offer myself. I love the idea of this solid marble statue on the coffee table above. Don't forget to check CL for accessories too!

Now that you know how to search, start looking. Check local and nearby Craig's List and use your words!

bye bye birdie,
A&H

Procrastination

While I should have been cleaning my house today, I decided to waste some time on Craigslist. I've actually sold some things on CL recently, but haven't looked at what's available to buy. You truly never know what you'll find. Like this . . .
A faux elephant tusk table with brass caps. I knew I had spotted something similar before, so, of course, I checked 1st Dibs. They have a similar console table available for a mere $7,500 . . .
And, here's one I found in the Atlantis Home blog lady's home . . .

It is definitely a unique look. Can't decide if I like it or not. Hmm. The Craigslist table is actually offered as a set with the cool mirrored credenza, mirrored planter and six chairs for $2,000. A little pricey for Craigslist, but probably a decent deal if this is your particular style. I can never understand why people won't sell items separately. Someone might like the mirrored credenza even if the tusk table isn't their thing.
Pretty
Some other Nashville CL finds . . .
Love the shape of this console table. Would be great in an entry or behind a sofa. Paint it the color of your choice.

This huge vintage Moroccan rug is a great deal ($200), especially considering it's 10'x20'.
There were also some nice side/occasional tables . . .
We had these same faux bamboo and glass side tables growing up. They're still in my parents' house.
Have you procrastinated by trolling through Craiglist lately? Am I the only one who does this?

Craig is Looking Good

Sorry, I was planning to post this on Thursday before I went out of town this weekend but Blogger had other ideas. During one of my recent Craigslist trolling sessions, I found some interesting pieces. First up, this Brutalist/Cubist-style mid-century dresser/credenza . . .
It looks to be a twin of Nelya's (of Head Over Heels) that Naomi (of Design Manifest) was lusting after . . .
I alerted Naomi to its presence, but alas it's too big for her space and she can't truck down to Tennessee to get it anyway. So, if anyone out there is looking for a cool piece, it's still available. A slight hitch - they're only selling it as a set (with a bed, highboy and bedside tables). Why people refuse to sell things separately is beyond me. Here is one of the bedside tables . . .
And speaking of bedside tables, I also spotted a pair of these up for sale . . .
which bear a striking resemblance to these on 1st Dibs . . .
And while we're on an Asian kick, I thought this little side table/cabinet was pretty cute . . .
I also saw some great mid-century modern chairs . . .

and barstools . . .
Lastly, some cool rugs.
Love the colors in this kilim rug. Where could I put this??
I usually see these in red, so cream is a nice change.

And last but not least, this handmade Greek rug. Just loved the colors . . .
So, have you found any great Craigslist goodies lately?
